Replacement of existing wastewater treatment plant, to be constructed, operated and maintained according to a 25-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreement.

Construction of water treatment plant near Dead Sea to treat saline water from three nearby wadis. The Design-Build-Operate project will also include a water conveyance system to transfer water to Amman.

Greater Amman Water Supply System Restructuring & Rehab.
In partnership with other donors, restructure and rehabilitate 16 zones of the Amman water supply system. Includes construction of 534 km of water mains, 15 water reservoirs, pumping, water system, and rehabilitation of leaking sections.

Aqaba Wastewater Treatment Facilities Expansion
Construction of new wastewater treatment plant and sewer lines, and rehabilitation of the existing plant and pumping stations. Also includes water reuse for agriculture component. The Aqaba wastewater treatment facility services Jordan’s only port. The project will help accommodate the expansion of the city and honor the Peace Treaty obligation to protect the Gulf of Aqaba and marine life.

Rehabilitate and expand the water supply distribution system for the municipality of Aqaba. Anticipated results include reduction of unaccounted-for water, and accommodation of rapid population growth in Aqaba.

Institute sustainable water demand management by building the institutional capacity for water demand management in the involved institutions, developing and supporting enforcement of laws and regulations for efficient water use, and demonstrating selected water demand management initiatives to the public. The Community-Based Initiative complements this project at the local level.

Administer a community support program that engages grassroots community action in water demand management activities by providing selected poor communities with small grants which the communities use in revolving grant form.

Technical assistance to design, implement and institutionalize an automated, accrual financial accounting system that provides accurate and reliable cost and revenue information.

Reuse for Industry, Agriculture and Landscaping (RIAL)
Facilitate implementation of water reuse, enhance the institutional capacity for reuse management and regulation, and demonstrate to decision-makers and the public that reclaimed water reuse is an effective, viable and safe component for augmenting Jordan’s water resources. This includes maintenance of the three USAID-funded pilot sites, expanding to include urban landscaping in Aqaba and Amman, improving the Environmental Management Systems at 6 leading industries in Jordan, and completing a design and feasibility study for the planned Al-Hassan Industrial WWTP.

Pollution Prevention for Environmental Health Project (P2EHP)
Provide technical assistance, training, commodities and small grants in support of watershed management activities. This will include assisting in the implementation of regulations for land-use restrictions at water supply locations, funding homeowners’ sewer connections, staging compost-farming demonstration plots, and launching public information campaigns.

Wastewater Treatment Plants for Two Small Communities
Design and supervise the construction of low-cost / low-maintenance central wastewater treatment facilities serving two areas in Jordan. Also, develop local capacity to operate and maintain the facilities, ensure protection of the environment and public health, and reuse the treated wastewater to generate income for the local population and provide an alternate source for irrigation easing demand on fresh water resources.

Assist the Water Authority of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation to change operation of Amman.

Strengthening Groundwater Data Management & Basin Modeling
Technical assistance to the Ministry of Water & Irrigation (MWI) to improve the quality assurance of groundwater resources data, integrate existing groundwater databases, and improve groundwater data analysis and reporting capabilities. In addition, a pilot model will be developed to enhance and augment MWI’s groundwater modeling capacity and formulation of optimization techniques. Also, to conduct an outreach program to inform the public in a pilot area of the consequences of over pumping groundwater.

Red Sea – Dead Sea Water Conveyance Feasibility Study and Environmental and Social Assessment
A two-year study to examine the technical, economic, financial and environmental feasibility of a multi-billion dollar project to pump seawater from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Dead Sea. A separate study will assess regional and project specific social and environmental impacts of the activity.

Conduct financial and technical audit of the Project management Unit of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the operation and management contract for Amman water distribution (LEMA).

Agricultural Research Services
Support pollution prevention activities, develop environmental law enforcement training protocols for the newly established Environmental Rangers, support the Ministry of Environment in preparing a modern natural resources land use strategy for Jordan, and improve forest conservation efforts by the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture. Also includes assisting Jordanian farmers develop new composting facilities in Jerash.

Systems Analysis for Sustainable Productivity in Jordan
Support the Water Resources and Environment (WRE) Team in improving management of Jordan’s threatened groundwater resources. The activity is working with Ministry of Water and Irrigation staff to develop a holistic approach to water resources management wherein all water sources are managed as a unitary resource allowing resource substitution, i.e., replacement of fresh water with treated wastewater for some applications.
