The Mother and Child Project
Back

The Mother and Child Project is one of NetCorps Jordan’s technology-based education projects which target children between the ages of 3 and 5 years, their mothers (or fathers) and their caregivers at kindergartens.

NetCorps Jordan was established with support from USAID and CISCO. The Mother and Child Project is implemented in partnership with the Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) and the Knowledge Stations in Tafileh, Maan, Karak and Aqaba. During the life of the project, a group of dynamic interns were responsible for initiating positive changes in early childhood education by integrating it with a simple edutainment computer software.

The project impacted 964 kindergarten children, 226 mothers and 58 teachers. The outcomes are best depicted by the stories of these mothers:

"I'm no longer intimidated by this machine," says Noura.

“I only completed my education till the 5th grade. I never imagined I would ever learn how to use a computer, let alone touch the mouse. Now, I am no longer intimidated by this complex piece of equipment,” says Noura, a mother from Karak. “Once my brother-in-law, who lives in the same house, forgot his home PC on; and he was shocked when he returned home one day to find I’d shut it down for him.”

"I enjoyed learning English, Arabic and math," Mohsena explains.

“I left school after getting through my elementary education, and my written Arabic has always been weak,” says Mohsena, a wife and the mother of 12 from Tafileh. “Though we have a computer at home, I could never figure out how to use it. I was attracted by the Mother and Child Project, but it was hard for me to join at first. The center where the sessions were being held was far from my home and I had to take care of my children. The idea stayed in my mind, and despite all the comments from my family, I finally decided to go for it. My weakness in writing was no longer an obstacle. The young interns encourage me all along. I became familiar with the parts of the computer and its various functions. I enjoyed the entertaining and educational software which taught us English, Arabic and math. With the help of the interns, I even learned how to use Microsoft Word to write.”
